Chapter Fifteen

Hannah, Ben, and Teri were waiting for us on the porch when we came back. Teri sighed with relief. “You were gone so long. We got a little worried.”

“The road is getting pretty muddy. It was slow going, but thank God for Kate’s Jeep,” Maggie said.

“We need to figure out what we need and go quickly,” I suggested and told them about Deer Creek.

Everyone agreed, and once again, we checked our supplies. Satisfied we were prepared for anything, we sat on the deck listening to the weather report on the radio. They were calling for more rain and unfortunately, I was right, the creek would be a problem in a day or two. I looked over at Hannah who looked tired and worn.

“Sorry, Hannah. This week was a bust.” I patted her hand.

“Nonsense. I’m having the time of my life. I’d be sitting at home staring at the four walls and feeling sorry for myself.” She watched Ben, who was down at the dock looking over my boat. “Besides, I wouldn’t have met Ben,” she said, smiling, and winked at me.

“Well, there’s that anyway,” Maggie said happily.

Hannah looked at Teri. “You promised you would show me how the Ouija board works.”

My eyes flew open. “You did? A Ouija board?” I groaned. “Why?”

“Don’t be a ninny,” Teri said. “Hannah’s never seen one in action. Maybe, and I mean maybe, we could try it later. You have a Scrabble game, don’t you? And I know you have a wineglass.”

“Yes and yes…” I said hesitantly. “Count me out. Wasn’t it enough that Ben scared the life out of us last night?”

Hannah laughed and Teri gave me a disappointed look. Maggie gave me those damned blue eyes and I groaned helplessly. “Okay, okay. I’m in.”

Hannah kissed my cheek and said, “This will be fun.”

“Says you,” I grumbled and looked at Teri. “See what you started.”

Maggie laughed. “It’ll be fine,” she said halfheartedly.

With that, the thunder rolled in the distance. “Perfect,” I said and glared at my redheaded sister.

After dinner, we sat at the table in front of the window as Teri arranged the Scrabble letters in alphabetical order in a circle on top of the table. The words “yes” and “no” were spelled out with the remaining letters and put on opposite sides, bisecting the circle. I was getting nervous already. Hannah watched with quiet amazement as did Maggie, who was sitting close to me. Well, maybe this wasn’t too bad of an idea.

“You mean this wineglass will move by itself?” Hannah asked.

Teri shook her head. “No, the idea is to put your finger on it, maybe it will move, maybe it won’t,” she said seriously and looked at me.

Right.This thing is going to be jumping all over the table.

Teri seemed to read my mind and laughed, then looked at Hannah. “Hannah, really, this isn’t a game, not to me anyway. So you’ll have to trust me if we need to stop.”

Hannah nodded and stopped smiling. “What’s going to happen?”

“Probably nothing,” Teri said and took a deep breath.
